TEAM TENNIS: Nederland advances in 5A playoffs after rout of Lee

Nederland nearly clean swept Baytown Lee in playoff team tennis.

Recently crowned the District 21-5A champions, the Bulldogs easily won their bi-district match of the UIL 5A playoffs 18-1 on Tuesday in Beaumont. The Bulldogs will face Richmond Foster at Goose Creek Memorial High in Baytown at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Nederland won five of six boys matches: Brandon Do over Riley O’Brien 6-0, 6-0; Tommy Hoang over Nick Bieschke 6-1, 6-2; Joshua Tran over Titus Batongmalaki 6-1, 6-0; Jarrett Atterberry over Kristian Garza 6-1, 6-1; and Easton Grice over Joseph Palos 6-1, 6-3. Evan Kerr earned Lee’s only win, beating Tereul Jimenez 7-6, 6-1.

Nederland did not allow a game in three girls singles matches: Jayci Wong over Grecia Aurelio; Megan Do over Diamond Frazier; and Han Vo over Johana Chavez. Grace Rigby beat Deyse Leija 6-1, 6-0; Heidi Hardy defeated Joanne Rivers 6-1, 6-1; and Emily Suire beat Jenniffer Sanchez 6-1, 6-1.

Boys doubles results: Do-Jimenez def. O’Brien-Bieschke 8-0; Hoang-Atterberry def. Batongmalaki-Kerr 8-4; Grice-Tran def. Garza-Bruno 8-1.

Girls doubles results: Wong-Rigby def. Leija-Chavez 8-0; Do-Vo def. Aurelio-Sanchez 8-0; and Hardy-Gonzalez def. Wade-Spence 8-0.

Mixed doubles: Laurel Marroquin-Shaahir Dhahani def. Palos-Frazier 8-2.
