The Texas-Louisiana Junior Winter Tour wrapped up Saturday at Gray Plantation in Lake Charles, with Texas players again winning the most flights.

More important to Jerry Honza, the tour’s executive director, overall participation was the best ever.

With 61 players teeing it up Saturday, it meant an overall increase of three percent from last year. Honza was pleased because players have other tournament options.

Brody Jeanes of Sour Lake won Boys 16-18 with a 78, edging Logan Guillory of Lake Charles by two strokes. In Boys 14-15, Jack Burke of Orange fired a 76 to win by a whopping 13 strokes over Freety Parker of Sulphur.

Karlei Hemler of Port Neches made it two for two in the Louisiana events by shooting a 76 to win Girls 16-18 by five strokes over Daphne Tilton of Iowa, La. Carly Whittington of Kinder shot an 85 to win Girls 14-15 by 15 strokes over McKinsey Joe of Lake Charles.

Xander Parks of Orange carded an 87 to nip Luke Hightower of Sulphur by one stroke in Boys 12-13. Chelsey Shaheen of DeQuincy won Girls 12-13 with a 105. In Co-Ed 10-11, Lincoln Parks of Orange had a 35 to finish 10 clear of Blake Butler of Moss Bluff.

Camryn Nelson of Orange clipped Foster Cecka of Port Neches by one stroke in Co-Ed 9 with a 26.

With Texas players winning 5 of 8 flights, the overall final score in “just for fun” team competition was Texas 19, Louisiana 11.

CHIP SHOTS

It was a long time coming for Larry Stansbury, but the Nederlander finally bagged his first hole in one last Thursday at Babe Zaharias. Stansbury holed a pitching wedge from 117 yards for the ace, with

Cap Hollier, Bim Morrow and Bones Morrison the witnesses.

The hole in one helped the Stansbury foursome win the front in the Thursday Senior 55 Plus Game in a Select Drive, Best 3 ball format. On the back, the team of Cricket Owen, Don MacNeil, Tommy Duhon and Robert Lynch won with minus-8.

Closest to the pin winners were Mike Hollier (No. 2), Ron Mistrot (No. 7), Owen (No. 12) and Stansbury (No. 15). …

Port Neches-Groves ex Andrew Landry came up short Sunday in his bid to win a second consecutive Web.com Tour event. Landry, tied for the lead after 54 holes, stumbled to a closing 76 that included a triple bogey 7 on the 17th hole.

Landry wound up tied for 17th and won $10,500. He’ll return to action next week when the Web.com plays its first 2017 United States tourney near Lafayette, La. …

Chris Stroud, playing in a PGA Tour event for the first time in 2017, missed the 54-hole cut by one shot at Pebble Beach. Stroud’s downfall was going double bogey, bogey, double bogey on the eighth through 10th holes during brutal weather conditions Thursday at Pebble.

He rebounded from an opening 76 with a 69 at Spyglass Hill and a 71 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club to finish his 54 holes at 216. Unable to get into the field at Riviera this week, he’s going to try to Monday qualify his way into next week’s Honda Classic. …

Former Nederland star Felicia Sauceda rebounded from a bad opening round last week at Ball State’s Sunshine Invitational to help Lamar’s Lady Cardinals to a third place finish. Sauceda shot rounds of 89-78-75 for a 242 total that was 20th among 66 players.

Lamar freshman Elodie Chapelet tied for medalist honors with a closing 78 for a 231 total over the St. Lucie Trails Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Lamar, with a team total of 953, finished 15 shots behind Toledo and three back of second place Southern Illinois. …

PNG’s Josh Elmore, despite struggling mightily with his putter, shot rounds of 77-77 to finish ninth in the Barbers Hill Invitational. Heavily recruited Travis Vick, a junior at Houston’s Second Baptist, fired a 138 (68-70) to win the tournament by nine strokes.

In team competition, PNG finished fifth with a 656 that was 40 strokes off the winning total of Cinco Ranch. Other PNG scores included a 164 by Chase Selman (79-85), a 167 by Timothy Feemster (84-83) and a 171 by Bryce Parsley (82-89). …

The Monday Senior 50 Plus Game at Babe Zaharias saw a sweep by the team of Kenny Robbins, Stansbury, Ed Hetzel and Larry Foster. They were minus 6 on both the front and the back. …

In the Saturday Super Senior 2 ball at the Babe, there was a tie at minus 5 on the front between the team of John Williams, Thad Borne, Tom LeTourneau, Don Flood and Lynch and the foursome of Bob West Gene Jones, Don MacNeil and Charlie Leard.

The back was won at minus 4 by the team of Cricket Owen, Joe Gongora, Doc Seguara and Charlie Huckaby. …

The Friday Senior 2 ball at Zaharias saw ties on both the front and the back. On the front, Russ Gloede, Cap Hollier, Raymond Darbonne and Dwayne  Benoit shot minus 4, as did the foursome of Paul Flores, Larry Johnson, Morrow and Gene Hardy.

On the back, minus 4 was also a winner for the team of Benny Sharpe, Tony Trevino, Bill Jones and Billy Thillet and the foursome of Craig Geoffroy, Gerald Huebel, MacNeil and LeTourneau. …

The Wednesday Zaharias DogFight saw a tie at 18 points between the team of Whitfill, Gary Fontenot, John House and Harold Wilkinson and the foursome of E.T. Robicheaux, Keith Marshall, MacNeil and Larry Rogers.

Closest to the pin winners were Huebel (No. 2), Earl Richard (No. 7), Charles Leard (No. 12) and Robicheaux (No. 15).

Jerry Honza is trying to gauge interest in an eight-week middle school golf pilot program. Honza’s plan is to have one practice and one match a week in March and April for young golfers who want to learn more about the game.

He is still working on details and wants to hear from parents of middle schoolers to gauge the amount of interest in such a program. He can be reached at 719-3949.
