Bob West’s Chip Shots

Due to all the rain, golf in Southeast Texas was limited last week. The highlight was Port Neches-Groves ex Braden Bailey placing fourth in the All Pro Tour tournament in Lufkin. Bailey now has two top fives in two APT events and his scores of 70-68-72-67 kept his stroke average in 16 professional rounds under 69.

Bailey will have one more APT event — Sept. 11-14 in Victoria — before his biggest tournament yet. That would be the Sept. 24-27 Korn Ferry Q School stage 1 qualifier at The Woodlands. He needs to get through two stages to make it to the Dec. 12-15 Q school finals in Winter Garden, Florida. …

Two Lamar exes — Dawie van der Walt and Shawn Stefani — have one last shot this week to earn a PGA Tour card for the 2019-20 season. Van der Walt, thanks to an 11th place tie last week in Boise, is tied for 23rd on the money list after two tournaments building toward this week’s Korn Ferry Tour Championship. Stefani, who missed the cut in Boise, is T53.

PGA Tour cards go to all those in the top 25. The Korn Ferry Tour Championship is Friday through Monday at Victoria National in Newburgh, Indiana. …

In the Monday Senior 50 Plus 2-ball at Babe Zaharias, played in an altered format because of wet conditions, the team of Bill Hammond, Rick Pritchett, Cap Hollier and Charlie Perez won the front with minus-11. On the back, the foursome of Ted Freeman, Pete Reobri, Rufus Reyes and Paul Flores placed first with minus-10. …

The Wednesday Zaharias Dogfight was won with 19 points by the team of Bim Morrow, Brian Guidry, James Trahan and Sid Ducote. Teams captained by Kenny Robbins and Ed Holley tied for second with 16 points.

Closest to the pin winners were Raymond Darbonne (No. 2), Jack Anderson (No. 7), Mike Brown (No. 12) and Rusty Hicks (No. 15).
