CROSS COUNTRY: Peveto wins 4A Region III cross country race

Eli Peveto of Little Cypress-Mauriceville finished nearly 40 seconds ahead of the rest of the field Monday in winning the 5,000-meter 4A Region III cross country race at Kate Barr-Ross Park in Huntsville.

Peveto, a senior, ran 16 minutes, 15.9 seconds, well ahead of Peyton Puenneke of Huffman (16:55.8). Caden Shaw of Bridge City was the second highest-finishing Orange County runner, coming in 21st (17:41.6).

Kaylen Smith of Bridge City was the highest-finishing local in the 2-mile 4A Region III girls run, taking 13th at 12:58.6. That was just 39 seconds behind winner Kayleigh Wagnon of Hudson.

Blake Mortera led Nederland runners in the 5-K 5A Region III event. The junior was 42nd at 17:40.4. Nederland was the only local team in the 5A boys race.

Senior Ny’Reonna Smith of Memorial was the highest-finishing local in the 5A Region III girls race, coming in 80th at 22:06.4. Nederland freshman Izzy Macha was 87th at 22:29.2.

The top four teams and top 10 individuals not already on one of the advancing teams have advanced to the Nov. 3 state meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
