VOLLEYBALL: PNG SECOND IN HUFFMAN

Port Neches-Groves overcame its first set loss of the season to reach the Huffman tournament finals before losing to the tournament host.

PNG beat Goose Creek Memorial 25-20, 25-15 and needed three sets to defeat Crosby 25-22, 23-25, 15-13. But in the championship match, Huffman scored a 25-12, 17-25, 28-26 win.

Kaitlyn Gil, Bayja Newby and Liz Bolyard were named to the all-tournament team. For the day, Newby came up with 33 digs and served 12 points, Gil had 22 digs and 38 kills, and Bolyard made six kills.

Harlee Barnwell had 19 service points, Holly Jones 17, Kasidee Sartin 13, and Gil and Newby 12 each. Jones and Barnwell dug 16 each, and Halley Smith totaled six. Layla Stansbury killed seven and blocked three.

Barnwell dished out 44 assists and Jones had 37. Ariel Muller led at the net with eight blocks, Bolyard denied six and Gil had five.

PNG will visit West Brook on Tuesday.
