BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City High School is seeking a new athletic director and head football coach after Dwayne DuBois stepped down from the position Wednesday to become once again the Hardin-Jefferson athletic director and head football coach.

“After much prayer, with consideration of those around me and those in authority above me, it is with deep humility that I announce my intent to resign my position as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of Bridge City,” said DuBois. “My wife and I will be moving to Sour Lake to serve, together, the students and community of Hardin-Jefferson ISD as I move into the role of AD/Head FB Coach.”

DuBois notched a 17-14 record at his alma mater the last three seasons. DuBois is a 1986 graduate of Bridge City High School.

He helped guide the Cardinals to back-to-back playoff appearances in both 2015 and 2016.

The Cardinals captured the District 10-4A Division I title in 2016 and won two playoff games with wins over Center (35-28) and Bay City (39-19) before falling to Stafford in the 4A Region III semifinals. The playoff win over Center was the Cardinals’ first playoff victory dating back to 2005.

“Thank you to every athlete, parent, co-worker and community member who loved me and my family unconditionally,” said DuBois. “You deserve the very best. We will forever be grateful for this experience and opportunity. You’ve made it all worth it.”

DuBois and his wife were able to watch both their sons excel at Bridge City as both Camden and Caleb played quarterback at Bridge City. Caleb DuBois is currently a standout on the Cardinal baseball team that just claimed the 22-4A title as the Cardinals are preparing for the playoffs.

DuBois will return to Sour Lake again after he had a successful run as head coach in 2013 and 2014.

The Hawks compiled a 19-7 mark in two seasons, going 8-5 in 2013 and 11-2 in 2014, advancing to the third round of the postseason each time.

DuBois is taking over for Jared Sloan, who accepted a job at Rice Consolidated. Sloan had replaced DuBois the last three seasons, and the Hawks compiled a 11-18 record, making the playoffs the last two seasons, finishing third and fourth respectively in district play.

Prior to going to H-J in 2013, DuBois served as offensive coordinator at Vidor for Pirate coach and longtime friend and fellow Bridge City graduate Jeff Mathews. DuBois was part of a Vidor program that went three rounds deep in 2011, that school’s deepest run since 1964.

DuBois was also a long-time assistant at Bridge City in the 1990s.
