PORT NECHES — One goal could have prevented Port Neches-Groves’ first loss of the season in girls soccer.

Some might still debate whether the goal was actually scored.

Nonetheless, College Station’s 1-0 win over the host Indians on Friday was among eight matches either decided by a single goal or tied on day 2 of the Cajun Classic.

Port Arthur Memorial fought to a scoreless tie against South Houston in the nightcap after losing 1-0 to Bridge City earlier in the morning. Bob Hope scored a 1-0 win over Pasadena Rayburn before Victoria West blanked the Eagles 4-0.

PNG (4-1-2) tried to score off a corner kick late in the first half when College Station goalkeeper Haley Wilton dove for a save right at the line. Indian fans cheered for what they thought was a goal that was ruled otherwise, but play resumed as no goal was ruled.

The first half ended scoreless.

The match was a tight battle between the top-ranked 5A Region III team in College Station and fourth-ranked PNG.

“I’m proud of the way we competed,” PNG coach Aimee Bates said. “We made good decisions with the ball at our feet and will look to fix some things that will give us a better outcome next time we meet up.”

The Cougars outshot the Indians 12-4.

PNG wraps up its run in the Cajun Classic against Hardin-Jefferson at 10:05 a.m. today in Indian Stadium. That follows College Station’s last game against Pasadena Dobie, which kicks off at 8:30 a.m.

Jackie Cardenas scored the decisive goal for Bob Hope against Rayburn. No details on Memorial’s matches were available.

Memorial will take on Silsbee at 11:40 a.m. today at the stadium. Bob Hope will face Bridge City at 8:30 a.m. on Practice Field No. 1.
