PNG’s Elmore, Hemler seek return to state tournament

Port Neches-Groves junior Josh Elmore will look to pull off the rarity of winning back-to-back regional golf championships today and Wednesday at River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy.

Elmore shot rounds of 73-73 last year at River Ridge to win by three strokes.

Elmore, who won the District 22-5A individual medal two weeks ago, will be joined in the 5A Region III tourney by his district championship team from PNG and by runner-up Nederland.

On the girls side, PNG will have two teams competing for a chance to advance to the state tournament. In 2016 at River Ridge, PNG’s Karlei Hemler and Brynna Bailey both qualified for state as medalists.

Hemler, looking to make her third trip to state, shot 146 (71-75), while Bailey carded a 151 (74-77). Hemler, a McNeese State-bound senior, is coming off winning her third District 22-5A title.
