PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Dawie van der Walt is one of 11 players who can say they’re among the top five in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Van der Walt, the South African who played collegiately at Lamar, is one of seven tied for fifth place after shooting a 6-under 66 on his 33rd birthday on the Pebble Beach Golf Links on Thursday. He’s a stroke behind three golfers, Freddie Jacobson, Cameron Smith and Bronson Burgoon, and two behind leader Chez Reavie.

Van der Walt, who earned his first top-25 finish earlier this season, shot 4-under on the front nine and was 2-under on the back.
