WEST COLUMN: Richey’s eagle helps team win DogFight

Dale Richey of Kountze was the latest player at Babe Zaharias to hole a shot from the fairway for an eagle on a par 4.

Richey, playing in the Wednesday DogFight, sank a sand wedge from 64 yards for a two on the sixth hole. The shot helped his team of Bill Jones, Larry Rogers and Bob West place
first with 18 points. Closest to the hole winners were Joe Gongora (No. 2), Ron Mistrot (No. 7, No. 12) and Adam Noel (No. 15). …

The Thursday Game at The Babe was contested in a stroke play, 2-low net format. Winning with a 134 total was the team of Earl Richard, Bob Byerly, Tom LeTourneau and Paul
Bourgeois
. Closest to the pin winners were Larry Johnson (No. 2), Rick Pritchett (No. 7), Dennis Frazier (No. 12) and Rodney Christman (No. 15). …

The Saturday Game at The Babe was played in a two-best ball format. On the front, there was a tie at minus-3 between the team of Jim Jordan, Harrell Guidry, Gary Fontenot and Don Duplan and the foursome of Cap Hollier, Lee Bertrand, Gene Jones and Tommy Duhon. The Hollier team won the back at even par. …

Entries are being taken for the 20th annual Joe Williamson Memorial Tournament set for Saturday, Oct. 3 at Babe Zaharias. Entry fee is $50 per person and it includes all fees. The format is a flighted, two-person scramble with players grouped by the low handicap. Each player will be allowed to buy two mulligans at $5 each. Three places will be paid in each flight.

All proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for students at Nederland and

Idylwild Golf Club is hosting a Monday, Oct. 5 Pro-Am to raised money for the Henry and Juel Homberg scholarship fund at Lamar University. The format is a four-person shamble.
Entry fee is $100 per player. Idylwild’s Ronnie Pfleider is hoping to attract a large number of former Lamar golfers who played at Tyrrell Park when Homberg was the pro there.

Headlining the field is former Beaumont PGA Tour star Bruce Lietzke, who will be hitting a shot on a par-3 hole and taking photos with each team. Players can enter a full team or enter as a single and be paired with other singles.

Entry fee is $100 per person which includes all fees and a meal. To enter, call Pfleider at 753-2521. …

The Senior 50 Plus Game at The Babe was played in a best two ball format, with the team of Johnson, Scott Stahn, Larry Thompson and John House winning the front in minus 3. On the back there was a tie at even par between the team of Hollier, Fontenot, Duplan and Joe Vanderweg and the foursome of Noel, Paul Brown, Wes McGuire and LeTourneau.
