A 41-year-old Florida man participating in a local fishing tournament died on Sabine Lake Saturday afternoon.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a possible drowning from a boater on Sabine Lake — about 1.5 miles southeast of Stutes Island — around 1 p.m. Saturday, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Marine Division and the Port Arthur Fire Department went to the lake, where a group of fisherman participating in a Redfish Tournament said they noticed one of their boats was unoccupied.

The fishermen said they found the Florida man floating face down about 100 yards away from the empty boat. They retrieved the man from the water and tried CPR until the first responders arrived.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office release states the drowning victim had a history of seizures, but the investigation is ongoing pending autopsy results.

The victim’s name is being withheld until family is notified of his death.
