Upon reading a recent letter pleading with PAISD and Port Arthur to vote for Julia Samuels, I have to object.
As a parent with three children in the school district, I would like to remind you to get out and vote in the PAISD school election.
I also to want to ask Michelle Stoneham Barnette what projects did the Nederland ISD not complete in the previous bond issue.
I was most happy to hear that Dr. Mary Jean George had agreed to run for a position on the school board. Dr. George served 18 years on the board in the past.
On behalf of Southeast Texas Hispanic Educational and Cultural Center Inc., I would like to express our gratitude for the support and generous donations from La Suprema Mexican Restaurant, Del Papa Distributing, Davis’ Donuts and Deli, Southeast Texas Water, HEB, Neches Federal Credit Union and Wal-Mart.
I would like to thank Ms. Sherry Koonce for the objective reporting she did regarding the foster home in Beauxart Gardens. She represented a fair assessment of the issues that we as residents feel are salient to the placement of the foster group home.
After pastoring Fellowship Baptist Church for 43 years, I think that I can speak for the heart of this ministry. Pastor Joe Roberts has demonstrated his love for kids throughout his 20-year tenure of ministry.
The Van Buren Buddies Relay For Life Team wants to thank everyone who supported the pageant by their donations, attendance and also to the contestants who participated in the pageant.
The Beauxart Gardens residents amaze me. Not only have they chosen to live outside the city limits where there are no restrictions and anyone or anything can be build or live where or how they want to. But when the first thing that is coming into their neighborhood is a foster home for low risk children they are up in arms.
Gene Dammon, in his column “Wright’s preaching part of Obama,” must think as I do about the “Rev. Jeremiah Wright. He rightfully puts that title in quotation marks. Mister Jeremiah Wright does not deserve such a title as “reverend” because of his outrageous and insulting rants against this great country and his ridiculous chargers against its white citizens.
We Democrats are split down the middle; half for Hillary Clinton and half for Barack Obama.
You may have seen the national Associated Press news story describing how the YMCA is helping tackle America’s lifestyle health crisis. The story offers a great snapshot of our national strategic plan, our history of addressing important social issues and our mission to help those who struggle to improve the health of their bodies, minds and spirits.
As a resident of Nederland as well as a business owner and a parent with children and grandchildren in Nederland, I commend the school board, the teachers the administrators, and the students for their work in studying the aspects of using school uniforms and their actions regarding implementing the use of such uniforms for the 2008-09 school year.
I was touched by the article on the front page of The Port Arthur News regarding the donation of several organs to others subsequent to the demise of Brandon Oliver, the son of Mrs. Pat Robertson.
People Supporting People had a blessed 2007 year. Without the Lord sending others to help us with our goal we could not have made it.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to the members of our community for the wonderful way in which they supported The Salvation Army of Port Arthur during the year of 2007, but especially during this Christmas season.
On behalf of the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center, I want to thank and congratulate Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince for re-establishing a Christmas Parade in downtown Port Arthur.
Another year has gone by and “Bethlehem on the Boardwalk,” now in its seventh year, has definitely become a success.
Many of us wonder whether Dr. Ron Paul is the only presidential candidate who is pro life. Christians who believe in life from conception to natural death should support and vote only for those who are pro life.
There are things we can do about global warming.
I recently looked at the so called free trade in the country, since I do represent workers. I pondered just how free it really is.
I am ashamed of a Congress that would do as the Democrats want to do. Pass a meaningless resolution demanding the President stop being the leader of this country and threatening to withdraw funds from the troops. ...
This issue “Red Snapper Regulations” is the current “Pearl Harbor” style attack on recreational anglers by enviro whackos to reduce the recreational for hire sector to rubble. This is an $8 billion industry on the verge of being lost.

There is a double standard manifested between political liberals and conservatives. This is apparent in the New York Times and other papers and CBS, NBC, CNN, ABC, PBS and MSNBC, who gave prominence to liberal items and little mention of conservative. ...

I wonder if some of our schools are not becoming more of a penal colony than a house of education. ...
The past and recent tragedies on our city’s streets and highways are regrettable, and my sincerest condolences to the affected families. May God comfort you and your family, and keep you in his care. ...
There were times in this society when men would hide their sins. We now flaunt it as jewelry. I was not shocked by the You Tube video of some of the Memorial High School students dancing provocatively before an elderly teacher; neither should the person who brought this video to your attention.
Our kids have become a product of what we as parents, preachers and teachers did and are still doing in those “clandestine places.” The Lord Jesus Christ Son of God said, “What is done in the dark will come to the light.” A very close friend of mine once said, “The things that make you laugh will make you cry” (what brings pleasure sometimes brings pain). We as a nation must first admit that we have a problem in our society and not just in one high school.
We must ask ourselves when did the problem start and how can it be fixed or if it can be fixed? Personally, I think that we are at the point of no return and the only reason God has not destroyed America is because of his grace and mercy. As the Amorites, of the Old Testament times, the iniquity of America is not yet full or complete.

It’s not the President or the Vice President’s decision that we are going forward in Iraq. We the people. Seventy percent of the voters have already cast their ballot. Dictators control the will of the people. Maybe America removed the wrong dictator from power?
In 1776 the American Declaration of Independence declared that government derives its Just Powers “from the consent of the governed.” We the people. A republic.
Benito Mussolini in Italy and Adolph Hitler in Germany are good examples of democracy turning into a dictatorship, war, death by millions. All in the name of democracy. Cheney said it correctly, if they just kill enough of us. Your son, your daughter, not his. Each making tons of money off this war at enormous expense of taxpayers’ money and lives.
Cheney likes to shoot people. Put him on the front lines. Maybe he will get an attitude change. Administration from start to finish has introduced nothing but death and destruction. We are slaves to politicians.

Yes, there are angels here on earth. I stood there with my knuckles in my mouth and tears in my eyes watching her trying the coax Jack, my Pomeranian, from the busy street knowing that if I made a sound he would run even further away from her.
There she was perfectly coifed, with lovely makeup, in one of her finest suits, hosiery and matching heels, kneeling in wet grass from the early morning dew trying desperately to get Jack to come to her. She had hurried all the way over from Market Basket under difficult circumstances when she saw me trying to catch him.
Cars were backed up on both sides, waiting, probably running late for work while she begged Jack to come to her. A gentleman pulled into the library parking lot and ran over to help. When Jack started paying attention to that kind man is when Mrs. Bush of C.O. Wilson was able to grab hold of Jack. He probably would not be here today if not for Mrs. Bush’s loving heart and that fine man’s generous effort.
I cannot forget the image of Mrs. Bush on her knees in that dripping, wet grass, her clothes soiled, trying to help a stranger in need. Many times I had heard from my children and grandchildren how wonderful a person she is but now I have my own personal experience with this extraordinary lady. Thank you, Mrs. Bush, and thank you kind sir, for saving Jack’s life.

I, like so many in Sabine Pass, was blessed to have Spc. Ryan Berg in my life. He was like one of my own sons. My two sons and daughter loved him like a brother. He was even a big part of my two granddaughters’ lives. I, along with my husband, were humbled by the support shown our community along the funeral procession route. I want to say a special thank you to Valero, the Port Arthur Police and Fire Department, CBI construction and everyone who stood on the route and paid their respects. It was wonderful.
Thank you Scottie and Travis for sharing your wonderful son with so many.

Once upon a time, there was a small Credit Union in the area. It was not located in the prettiest part of town, but the staff there was friendly and knew your name.
Then the Credit Union began to grow and it built a cold, white brick building in the center of town for all to see. The staff still knew your name, but as it continued to grow, the Credit Union became less and less friendly.
Then it outgrew even its newest location and expanded again. This time, the staff was put behind glass walls and out of the public's view. And the atmosphere became less and less inviting and the staff became impersonal. In its quest to grow, it merged with another Credit Union, then another and suddenly, the members were no longer people, just account numbers.
Then, the proverbial velvet rope was put in front of the teller's counter to keep the members back until called to come forward. And the atmosphere became almost indifferent. Very few of the nice people who knew your name in the old days are left. Isn't progess wonderful!

A Jan.14 newspaper column by conservative columnist David Brooks concerning The Bush Administration's new Iraq policy is a classic example of contorted reasoning. Basically, Brooks says that because Democrats have not presented a viable alternative to the Bush plan, defined I suppose as one with which Republicans can agree, they will be partially responsible if the Bush plan fails.
Bush has never given serious consideration to the opinions or suggestions of anyone outside of his own appointed inner circle of advisers, particularly when it comes to his Iraq policy. This is evidenced by his response to The 9/11 Commission Report as well as the more recent recommendations of the bi partisan congressional committee on Iraq. Consequently, if the current Bush plan fails, it will be the sole responsibility of the Bush Administration.
David Brooks' attempt to assign blame for the possible failure of the plan makes about as much sense as saying that if an arsonist sets your house afire and you fail to douse the flames you are partly to blame for your loss. Does Brooks really believe anyone would buy into that argument? Whatever happened to the Republican Creed of taking responsibility for one's own actions?

It's time to end slavery of a diffrent form. Give people their freedom. Support the Employee Free Choice Act. Don't take a step back. Move foward toward a better future for people. Let them improve their lives by making their own choice. Think about it, would you like someone not allowing you a choice of how to run your life? It's time to stand up for the rights of the American working middle class! This is what made America a great nation.

As my family and I prepare to move on to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission in Columbus, Ohio, we will forever cherish the friendships and memories we’ve made in South East Texas.
A parent should never have to bury a child.
For too many mothers and fathers that is a reality they have faced and a burden that will be carried the rest of their lives. Nothing can eliminate the pain; nothing can fill the void left by the loss of a precious child.
"Honey you never know why the trip was canceled, maybe God is saving us from harm, a plain crash or some kinda danger there.
A body can lose a number of parts (arms, legs, etc.) and still survive. A soul is one entity; when it leaves it takes everything with it.
I was as happy as any Jefferson County taxpayer to see that 18 percent pay hike for elected officials tossed in the trash.
Now it’s time for some of those opposing the pay increases to take the fight to another level: the U. S. Congress.
Thank you Port Arthur! The family and I wish to express our sincere appreciation for the many expressions of sympathy and well wishes during the recent illness and passing of Donna Worthington.
