PNG’s Riggs named writers’ third-team all-state

Port Neches-Groves wide receiver Preston Riggs was named to the third team of the Texas Sports Writers Association 5A all-state team Friday.

Riggs caught 72 passes for 1,403 yards and 19 touchdowns in helping the Indians win a share of the District 22-5A championship for the third year in a row.

Port Arthur Memorial running Elijah Hines, who signed with Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, was named honorable mention, as were PNG offensive lineman Josh Hranicky and PNG linebacker Austin Bost.

Highland Park quarterback John Stephen Jones was named offensive player of the year. Manvel senior linebacker DePriest Taylor earned defensive player of the year.

Writers nominated and voted on players for the all-state teams.
