Groves’ Williams wins Southwest Open

BEAUMONT — Derek D. Williams of Groves bowled his way to a $3,000 first prize by winning the PBA Beaumont Southwest Open on Sunday at the Crossroads Bowling Center.

Williams totaled 4,804 pins through 21 games, including eight in match play, in which he posted a 5-3 record. Anthony Simonsen of Princeton was second with 4,728 and won $1,800; Joe Findling of Mesquite was third with 4,650 for $1,300 and Chris Hibbitts of Keller took fourth with 4,650 for $1,050.

Nine more bowlers won at least $420, with the top eight advancing to match play. The top 13 bowlers after qualifying advanced to the semifinal round and earned money, with the top eight competing in the match-play finals.

Another Jefferson County bowler, Mark Williams, came in 12th. Williams, a PBA Hall of Famer, is Derek Williams’ brother.

George Gund of Lumberton was 11th.
