A Houston man, arrested Wednesday for murder at the Jefferson County Courthouse is being held at Jefferson County Jail for bonds totaling $4 million.

Bartholomew Granger, 41, allegedly opened fire in front of the Courthouse Wednesday killing one innocent bystander and wounding three others.

“It was a senseless act of violence that has forever left a traumatic impact on our community,” said Carol Riley, public information officer for the Beaumont Police Department.

The alleged murder victim, 79-year-old Minnie Ray Seabolt of Deweyville, was pronounced dead at the courthouse the day of the shooting.

Granger’s daughter, 20-year-old Samantha Jackson, had testified on Tuesday in the first day of Granger’s trail for aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Mitch Woods.

Jackson remains in critical condition after her father allegedly shot her and ran her over with a full-size pick-up truck during the violent engagement.

Her mother was also wounded in the gunfight.

Granger’s brother, Lyndon Granger, 43, was out on bond for indecency with a child and was arrested Wednesday night in Houston, according to BPD.

Jefferson County District Judge John Stevens set Granger’s bonds at $3 million for the murder charge and $1 million for aggregated sexual assault of a child.

According to a BPD press release, officers recovered a Beretta CX-4 Storm, .40 caliber Smith and Wesson Carbine from the GMC pick-up truck Granger was seen driving before police gunfire disabled the vehicle two blocks from the Courthouse.

After running into a business to take hostages at Richard Construction Inc., located at 1110 Neches Street in Beaumont, RCI employees were able to disarm the wounded Granger and let the Beaumont Police Swat teams into the building, according to BPD.

“We are so proud of how our community has responded,” said Riley. “There are so many heroes out of this.”

Entrance doors at the Jefferson County Courthouse were shot out during the incident.

The Jefferson County Courthouse has been reopened as of Thursday afternoon.
