The Museum of the Gulf Coast is hosting an out-of-this-world free family fun day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The theme is “Science and Technology of the Future.”

Brittany Delagarza, education, tour and volunteer coordinator for the Museum, said the theme is meant to inspire future engineers, scientists and STEM students to reach above and beyond.

“I feel like a lot of the schools are pushing for STEM-related activities right now,” she said. “The museum wants to share the information with our members, and getting them involved in this in family fun day is fun and educational at the same time.”

The event will feature the Lamar University Engineers and Engineers Without Borders as guest speakers, as well as the Robotics Club to give demonstrations.

The Charitable Force will also bring Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, Princess Leia and Kylo Ren of Star Wars to interact with children and guests.

Charitable force is a non-profit organization with people passionate about Star Wars. They often visit families, hospitals and museums as a way to give back to the community.

“Whenever kids first start learning about science and engineering, it is usually through movies they like and watch,” Delagarza said. “Star Wars gives kids an outlet of what science and technology could be but in a fun, interesting way.”

Alongside science and technology, Delagarza said the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be teaching visitors about wildlife preservation with a snake demonstration.

“We’re going to have real snakes here,” she said. “The officers will talk about the wildlife population, bring specimens for people to observe and allow people to experience snakes up close and personal.”

Delagarza said the wildlife aspect plays a role in demonstrating a different STEM field outside of math and numbers.

“We have the Texas Parks and Wildlife office coming to show the biology side of the field,” she said. “STEM is not just limited to physics and chemistry. I’m bringing them into show there are different careers in the science field that can fill the desire anyone has.”

The event will also include crafts, face painting and fire trucks provided by the Port Arthur Fire Department.

“I want to draw in all ages because science and technology is something everyone can relate to,” Delagarza said. “This is what the world is like now and this gives children and students an early showcase of what they can do as a career one day in a fun, exciting way. We want to encourage everyone to come out, enjoy the day and learn something new.”

The winner of the 3020 Art Show will also be announced with a reception following the event at 2 p.m.
