BEAUMONT — Entergy Texas awarded Buckner Children and Family Services $2,580 to help young adults make the transition from the foster care system into adulthood and lead successful lives.

Entergy’s donation supplied 10 textbooks for young adults who grew up in foster care and are now attending college and in need of educational support.

The cost to attend college includes more than tuition, which can prevent vulnerable young adults from attending. Entergy Charitable Foundation’s award to Buckner contributed to providing school materials for clients attending college.

Laura May, the director of Buckner Children and Family Services in Southeast Texas, said she is very appreciative with the donation.

“There are so many children that age out of foster care with no contact or connection to their biological families,” said May. “It is easy to take something like textbooks for granted, but to these young adults, they make a difference. We are thankful to Entergy for their generous contribution.”

The Buckner transition programs offer emergency assistance and intensive case management for young adults with independence goals ranging from college, technical school or careers as well.

There are 26,000 young adults that age out of foster care each year; many without the support of a family. The staff is committed to serving as their support and “safety net” as they make the transition from adolescence to self-sufficient adults.

“The ultimate outcome is an educated young adult with a steady income, a home and a stable family life,” said May. “The benefits are for the children leaving the foster care program to become productive members of society, not dependent on government assistance or homeless, but self-sufficient with the opportunity to reach their God-given potential.”

Buckner Southeast Texas is a faith-based nonprofit ministry dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children, families and senior adults in Beaumont and the Golden Triangle area.
