The Port Arthur Evening Sertoma Club held its “Service to Mankind” Banquet at the Pompano Club on May 19. President George Hyde gave a brief Mission Statement and Purpose of the Dinner and introduced honoree Jeff Wyble.

This is Mr. Wyble’s second award since he received a Service to Mankind Award from LaSertoma as a young man of 16-years-old, a press release from the club said. He has given and continues to give untiring devotion to helping others.

Mr. Wyble, 46, has been a resident of Groves most of his life. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves high School in 1986. He is married to his wife Rhana of seventeen years and they have one son, Jacob. Mr. Wyble worked for the City of Groves for twenty-two years before moving to his current position as Water Treatment Plant Supervisor for the City of Port Arthur. As a young man, he was a Boy Scout from twelve to sixteen years old. He was a member of the Boy Scout group that was led by the founder of the Bob Hope and Hughen School for Handicapped Children. At eighteen, he became an Eagle Scout. He still loves outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing. Mr. Wyble has recently served as a driver for the American Cancer Society, driving patients to Beaumont and Houston for chemotherapy and radiations treatments. He appeared on local television programs to promote volunteer participation in the Cancer Society. Recently a series of events have led him to serve in three different area prison ministries. During the last eight months, he has been active in the ”Operation Rebound” ministry with the United Methodist Temple at the Larry Gist State Jail, the Methodist “Kairos” ministry, and the Catholic “ACTS” prison ministry at the Mark Stiles State Penitentiary. He has spent thirteen days on prison retreats and averages two evenings a week participating in these programs.

Mr. Wyble believes, as Christians, we have a duty to bring the light of Christ into dark places. He has seen a growing movement in the community to serve others. He believes in the Lord and his instruction to help each other. He has stated “I will continue to serve for as long as the Lord will allow.”

The “Service to Mankind” Award is the highest honor that Sertoma can bestow upon a non-member for outstanding service to the community.
