Nederland pool & movie nights highlight summertime fun; Fireworks Extravaganza prep underway

NEDERLAND — With summer underway and school out, Nederland’s parks and recreation department is giving residents a chance to enjoy playtime.
The city pool is open and hosting family nights every Thursday through Aug. 15. The next family night is scheduled for movie night featuring “Back to the Future.”
“Our movie nights, which are [Thursday], July 11 and Aug. 1, will be fun,” Parks and Recreation Director Angela Fanette said. “We’ll be showing the movies at 8 p.m. until the movie ends, so it’s a little bit longer night out at the pool.
“We’ll definitely be open past 9 p.m. with the run time on some of those movies. You can float around, watch the movie and enjoy your time out there at the pool.”
The pool is closed Mondays, but it hosts open swim times from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
Nederland also announced the Eighth Annual 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza at Doornbos Park. The celebration begins at 5 p.m., with the bike and wagon parade starting at 6, the “Heroes Walk” following at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment by Still Crusin’ following at 7. The fireworks show starts at 9.
Fanette said the pool will open at 5 p.m. on July 4.
“We will be getting the park ready until then,” she said. “We are going to try to keep our capacity there to about 150. We will try to keep it moving with the lifeguards. As soon as a family leaves, another will go in.”
The park will have a VIP area for veterans and three of their family members.
“It’s a way for us to have a special viewing and seating area for those veterans as a way to show our gratitude,” Fanette said. “We also have our Field of Honor. Last year we had about 500 flags placed. We’re hoping to add to that this year.
“People can come by until June 28. They will give us their service member’s information. They can be living or deceased. We want to honor all that have served.”
Last year’s July 4 celebration was canceled due to inclement weather. Fanette said she is hoping for clearer skies this year.
“We’ve had every weather scenario come up in the parks department the last few years, “ she said. “That’s OK. That’s Southeast Texas.
“We are planning and hoping for fabulous weather. I hope the weather cooperates so everyone can enjoy the nice show.”
