Jamaal Charles’ final day as an NFL veteran was captured in a 6-minute, 34-second video the Kansas City Chiefs released Friday, two days after the Port Arthur native signed a one-day contract to retire with the team.

Kansas City drafted Charles out of the University of Texas in 2008, and Charles became the franchise’s leading rusher all-time after nine seasons. He played with the Denver Broncos in 2017 and Jacksonville Jaguars for two games in 2018 before deciding to retire.

The video highlighted Charles and Chiefs coach Andy Reid signing the contract and Charles taking a ceremonial handoff from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a native of Whitehouse, in the greater Tyler area. Reid told current Chiefs players that Charles is a future hall-of-famer.

“There are so many people in this building who played a part in my success on the field,” Charles said. “I wanted to come back to this organization where everything happened at. I wanted to come back and show my love to those people who showed their love for me, and I think it was only right to do it here.”

Charles finished his career with 7,563 rushing yards (7,260 in Kansas City) and 2,593 receiving yards (2,457 with the Chiefs). He had 259 yards against the Broncos in the Chiefs’ final game of the 2009 season, good for eighth-best in a single game all-time.
