SOFTBALL: Cardinals struggle at Texas State

SAN MARCOS — The Lamar softball team bats were kept quiet by Texas State on Wednesday evening. The Bobcats limited the Cardinals to four hits in the contest and LU only recorded one hit after the third inning in a 4-1 loss to Texas State.

Four different Cards, Shannon Klaus, Jade Lewis, Savana Guidry and Taylor Davis, all picked up one hit in the contest. Lewis pitched 5 1/3 innings on the night for the Cards as she allowed seven and four runs.
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first inning. Christiana McDowell led off the inning with a walk and stole second. After a sac bunt moved her to third, she came into score on a Tara Oltmann single putting Texas state ahead by one.

Lamar answered back in the top of the second inning. Jade Lewis helped herself out as she singled up the middle. Following a sac bunt that advanced her to second, Taylor Davis singled to right center on an 0-1 count, which scored Lewis. Davis would be left stranded on a base as the next two hitters were retired.

Following the first inning, Cards starter Lewis settled down as she allowed one hit in the second and third innings but the runners never advanced past first base. Like the Bobcats offense, the Cardinals offense cooled off and were limited to one hit over the next few innings.

After cruising through the second, third and fourth innings, Lewis ran into some trouble in the fifth inning. With one out and a runner on first, Mari Cranek reached on a bunt single putting two runners on.

McDowell followed with a single, which loaded the bases for the Bobcats. With the bases loaded Carter drew a bases loaded walk, which scored a run putting Texas State ahead, 2-1. After allowing a run, Lewis got the next two batters retired ending the inning.

Texas State extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. After the first out of the inning, Kennedy Cline singled. Following back to back walks, the bases were loaded for Texas State. Cranek followed with an RBI single to left field growing the Texas State lead to 3-1. McDowell followed with an RBI single of her own extending the lead to 4-1.

The Cards came to the plate in the top of the seventh inning looking for three runs to keep the game alive. After the first two Cards were retired, Guidry singled up the middle, giving the Cards its first hit since the third inning. However, the next LU hitter was retired, and LU was defeated 4-1 by Texas State.

The Cards return to action on Friday when they host Central Arkansas in Southland Conference action. LU and UCA will play a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch set for 4 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex.
