SOFTBALL: Kyle’s gem helps LU snap skid

HUNTSVILLE — The Lamar softball team won its sixth Southland Conference game of the season with a 5-3 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday afternoon. LU’s pitching limited the Bearkats to six hits in the contest. The win for Lamar snapped a three-game losing streak.

Erin Kyle picked up the win for LU as she pitched 6 1/3 innings and limited the Bearkats to six hits and three runs, two earned. Julia Voluntad pitched two thirds of an inning and picked up the save for LU. With the win the Cards improve to 15-18 on the season and 6-3 in SLC play.

The Red and White had seven different players pick up a hit in the contest. They were led by Jade Lewis and Savana Guidry, who each had three hits. Lewis led the team with two RBIs.

The Cards came out swinging in the top of the first inning. Kelly Meeuwsen singled to start the game and moved to second on a sac bunt. After a ground out, Meeuwsen scored on a single to center field by Jade Lewis, which put the Cards ahead 1-0. LU’s Savana Guidry had one more hit in the frame put Big Red could not get another run across the plate.

After a scoreless second inning, LU came to plate in the third and after a leadoff groundout, Shaina Amir singled. Lewis was hit by a pitch putting two on and Guidry followed with a single to center field loading the bases for LU. After the Guidry single, the Bearkats went to the bullpen and brought in Dunn to pitch. The first batter Dunn faced was Taylor Davis who drew a bases loaded walk putting LU ahead, 2-0. The Cards still had the bases loaded with two outs in the frame, Elizabeth Castillo reached on an error by the Bearkats right fielder that scored two runs growing the lead to 4-0.

Lamar put two runners on in the top of the fourth inning. Savana Mata drew a leadoff walk and after an out, Klaus singled to the pitcher. However, the inning came to a quick stop as the Bearkats turned a double play on the Cards ending the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cards starter Kyle kept the Bearkats offense quiet. After getting a ground out to open the inning, SHSU got its second hit of the game, a single. The next two hitters we retired, and LU led 4-0 after four innings of play.

Lewis opened the top of the fifth inning with a double to center field and Guidry followed with a single putting two on with no outs. Davis drew a walk that loaded the bases with no outs. Again, the Cards could not get anything across the plate as LU had a fly out and then hit into a double play ending the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sam Houston scored its first run of the game. Malia doubled to start the inning and came into score on a Cardinals error. Following the run, LU settled down and Kyle got the next three hitters out and LU led 4-1 after five innings of play.

The LU lead stretched to 5-1 opening the top of the seventh inning when Lewis hit a solo home run to left field. After the next two Cards were retired, Taylor Murphy and Castillo had singles but would be left on base.

Sam Houston looked to be threatening in the bottom of the seventh inning as they trailed by four runs. After a groundout, Malia walked, and Canada followed with a double to left field, putting runners on second and third. Following the double, Goetz singled to center field scoring one and putting runners on the corners. Fisher followed with a single to left scoring the third run of the game for SHSU and trimming the LU lead to 5-3.

With one out and LU leading 5-3, in the bottom of the seventh, Voluntad came in for Kyle and recorded a strikeout on the first batter she faced. Voluntad then got Thompson to fly out ending the game. Voluntad went two thirds of an inning and picked up the save for LU.

Big Red returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to San Marcos to face Texas State. First pitch is set of 6 p.m. from Bobcat Softball Stadium.
