WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Barrs repeats as Southland player of week, earns sixth such honor this season

FRISCO — For the sixth time this season and second-consecutive week, Lamar’s Chastadie Barrs was named Southland Conference Player of the Week, presented by MidSouth Bank the conference office announced Monday.

The sixth Player of the Week honors are the most by a single player in the Southland this season.

This week, Barrs and the Cardinals were a perfect 2-0. LU had wins over UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Over the two games, Barrs averaged a double-double, 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Besides scoring and rebounding, Barrs averaged 8.5 steals and 6.5 assists per game.

In the Cardinals’ win on Saturday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Barrs recorded a career-high 17 rebounds. For her career, Barrs has 703 rebounds, which is the ninth most in Lamar women’s basketball history.

For her career, Barrs has 617 steals, which is eight steals away from setting the NCAA career steals mark, which is currently held by Natalie White of Florida A&M. Barrs has recorded at least one steal in all 117 games she has played in during her career.

Last Tuesday, Barrs was named to the Naismith Women’s Defender of the Year watch list. She is one of 10 players named to the list and the only Southland Conference player.

Barrs and the Cardinals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Houston Baptist in Southland Conference action. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. from Sharp Gym.
