VIDOR — Rachel Sarlls, welcome to postseason basketball.

Barbers Hill’s freshman guard scored eight of her 12 points in the second half, and the Eagles secured the No. 1 seed in District 21-5A with a 49-37 win over Memorial in a tiebreaker of the district co-champions.

Sarlls said she had no idea what a difference she’d make Friday, but she’s enjoying the varsity experience.

“It has been very fun,” she said. “I love my teammates. I’m like really, really happy I get to be here right now.”

Jaelin Holden led the Eagles with 14 points. Julia Sion had 13 points and eight rebounds for Memorial.

It won’t be the last time the two teams see each other in a sense, because both teams are going to La Porte to play in a bi-district doubleheader Tuesday.

Memorial (17-11), which had last won a district title in 2012, will take on 22-5A tri-champion Friendswood at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That will be followed by Barbers Hill (26-10) vs. Crosby at 8.

Friendswood took the third seed after a coin flip. But after trading seven-point victories in 21-5A play this season, Memorial and Barbers Hill got to play a rubber match.

“It’s a good warm-up game for us,” BH coach Tri Danley said. “They’re [Memorial is] very competitive, very well coached. This was a good game for us.”

The Lady Titans, though, struggled mightily on offense, shooting 14 for 50 (28 percent) from the field, including 3 for 25 from three-point range. Many of their short-range shots in the first half simply went for naught, and Barbers Hill at times disrupted their offensive sets.

“I think they had more energy,” Memorial coach Kevin Henry said. “They were a little more poised than we were. We had some turnovers, and that kind of frustrated a couple of our players, here and there, instead of continuing to play.”

At the free throw line, Memorial made only 7 of 20. Barbers Hill, which shot 19 for 42 (45.2 percent) from the field, went 8 for 13 at the stripe.

Memorial led just once, 2-0, before Sarlls got Barbers Hill on the board with a three-point bucket. Leading 9-3 through one period, the Eagles got into the bonus at the 6:27 mark and had a 22-10 lead at halftime.

The field goal shooting for both teams picked up in the third quarter. Sion had six points in the quarter and the Lady Titans pulled within 31-23 with 1:46 left in the period. They also got within 39-31, but no closer than that.

Jazlyn Marcus had nine points for the Eagles. Emily McElroy chipped in six for Memorial.
