VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Barbers Hill denies PNG No. 1 seed

Port Neches-Groves took a 2-1 match lead on Barbers Hill before the Eagles closed out two close sets to secure at least a share of the District 21-5A championship and a No. 1 playoff seed Friday.

Kaitlyn Gil registered 21 kills and 13 digs, but PNG came up short 25-14, 21-15, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12. Barbers Hill, which had one district loss going into the match, swept PNG (31-6, 9-2 in 21-5A) for the regular season.

Liz Bolyard added 15 kills and three blocks for PNG. Halley Smith had 22 digs, with Bayja Newby adding 15 and Holly Jones 13. Smith served 12 points (one ace), Gil 10 (one ace), Kasidee Sartin eight, and Maylin Louvier and Jones six each (ace for Jones).

Nederland 3, Dayton 2

In Dayton, the Bulldogs (21-18, 7-5 in 21-5A) won the final two sets at the wire to secure the No. 3 seed from 21-5A, 13-25, 25-19, 16-25, 26-24, 17-15.

Hannah Hickey led Nederland with 15 kills and two blocks. Karley McGill (10 kills, nine digs, five blocks) and Meg Sheppard (eight kills, eight digs, two aces) nearly totaled double-doubles in the win, Kamren Savarino had 32 assists and Destyn Miguez finished with 22 digs for Nederland.
