VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Bulldogs dig from second-set hole, sweep Titans

Published 9:27 pm Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Memorial needed this match and was just two points away from tying Nederland one set apiece.

That’s when Nederland took over and took away any momentum the Titans had built.

The Bulldogs turned a 23-16 deficit into a two-point win and survived another close set to sweep the Titans 25-16, 29-27, 25-22 in a key District 21-5A match for both teams Tuesday at Nederland’s Dog Dome.

The win gave the Bulldogs (19-15, 5-2 in 21-5A) a season sweep of the Titans and kept them a game behind district co-leaders Port Neches-Groves and Barbers Hill in the district race. Memorial (18-16, 1-6) has five games left and needs two victories to surpass last year’s school record for wins and secure a second straight winning season, but will be off Friday.

Mackenzie MacFarlane’s six solo blocks led Nederland’s defensive effort. Meg Sheppard (nine kills, five digs, two aces) and Jenna Jarrett (22 assists, four kills, four digs, one ace) posted all-around efforts, while Hannah Hickey (seven kills, two blocks) and Karley McGill (five kills) aided the Bulldogs’ win.

Statistics for Memorial were unavailable.

Nederland will go for the season sweep of Barbers Hill on Friday in Mont Belvieu. Memorial will visit Barbers Hill next Tuesday.

Also Tuesday: Sabine Pass (10-7, 3-4 in 24-2A) lost to Deweyville in five innings, and Port Neches-Groves was off. PNG will visit Cleveland on Friday.
