VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Titans earn first district victory

Memorial has finally tasted victory in District 21-5A, doing so in sweep fashion.

Behind Korie Dominick’s 11 kills and Gabriela Arocho’s 12 assists, Memorial took a 25-18, 25-9, 25-20 victory at Cleveland on Tuesday. The Titans improved to 18-14 and 1-4 in 21-5A.

With a win at home against Dayton on Friday, Memorial can match last year’s win total.

Barbers Hill 3, PNG 1

In Port Neches, the Rock-A-Noos have met their match in district play.

Barbers Hill ended Port Neches-Groves’ 22-match district winning streak, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23. PNG (26-5, 4-1 in 21-5A), which has won 31 of 33 district matches, had last lost a district contest Oct. 12, 2016, to Nederland at home.

The win put Barbers Hill (4-1 in 21-5A) in a tie with the Indians for first place in 21-5A.

The loss did not come without double-doubles from Kaitlyn Gil and Harlee Barnwell. Gil led the offensive and defensive charges for PNG with 18 kills, 20 digs and three blocks. Barnwell made 16 assists to go with 10 digs and four aces.

In all, four Indians actually reached double-digits in kills. Bayja Newby had 13 digs, and Halley Smith added 12. Holly Jones had a team-high 19 assists.

Smith finished with nine service points (two aces), and Newby, Gil and Barnwell each added eight.

PNG will visit Vidor on Friday.

 

Sabine Pass 3, Spurger 0

Anahi Gutierrez’s 10 digs and Nevaeh Jones’ eight blocks played a big role in Sabine Pass’s 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 home victory over Spurger on Tuesday.

Yainn Zuniga added 17 assists, two aces and two kills for the winning Sharks (10-6, 3-3 in 24-2A). Jamesia Jones added eight digs, Jaizee Landry had five aces and four kills, and Joanna Smolsky spiked eight kills.

Sabine Pass will visit Hull-Daisetta on Friday.

 

Dayton 3, Nederland 1

The Bulldogs (18-15, 4-2 in 21-5A) took a stunning loss at home with a 23-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-17 decision to Dayton.

No statistics were available. Nederland has a bye date before hosting Memorial next Tuesday.
