The Willie Carter Outreach Center and its community partners are coming together to sponsor the 18th Annual City-Wide Youth Explosion.

The event, which is free for all students in the Port Arthur Independent School District, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center, 1800 Lakeshore Drive.

The first 1,500 kids who attend will receive free school supplies. There will also be free book bags, clothing and a light lunch will be provided and resource information will be available.

“Hopefully the weather will hold out for us but we will be there rain or shine,” Johnny Hulin, executive director of the Willie Carter Outreach Center, said. “There will be between 20 to 22 resource tables with different agencies to civic and social clubs to Port Arthur Health Department and we will have one group offering free vouchers for school physicals.”

The event has grown from serving about 50 kids to averaging 1,200 to 1,500 kids every year.

Children must be present with an adult in order to receive the school supplies.
