Benefits to help two locals in need

Published 7:12 pm Thursday, August 2, 2018

Two separate benefits are planned for two community members going through serious health problems.

Nan Gregg

Nan Gregg was diagnosed with stage-four lymphoma in four areas of her body on Dec. 22, 2016. Not wanting to spoil the holidays, she declined telling her children of the diagnosis until after her first round of chemotherapy in the second week of January 2017.

Gregg volunteers with the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce and is a well-known face in the community.

Debbie Plaia, executive director of the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce and close friend of Gregg, said her friend was in remission for about a year before the cancer came back.

“She has been accepted into a T-cell trial program and will start in a few weeks. We are asking for continued prayers,” Plaia said.

The outpouring of support from the chamber, friends, family and even those who have only met her briefly, is amazing, Plaia said.

A multi-day benefit will be held from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m.–“until” on Saturday at 1311 Port Neches Ave. in Port Neches across from the post office. There will be links, drinks and chips, Team Nana Banana shirts and more for sale.

Mike Browning

Mike Browning is a retired law enforcement officer having worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in the county jail, Groves Police Department and deputy constable for Precinct 7. Then, due to cutbacks by the county commissioners court, he was laid off in 2010 and went to work for Nederland Police Department until his retirement in 2017 with the intent to go back to the constable’s office, according to information from Circle of Hope.

However, in December 2016, Browning had open heart surgery and after complications from having five by-passes, he was not able to return to work and the position with the constables office was filled.

He was able to get a small part time job in retail which helps with everyday expenses, but he is left to pay for his Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) insurance and some of his medical expenses with his small retirement check, thus putting a strain on him.

A benefit including a silent auction, live auction, barbecue lunches, live music, 50/50 split pot, face painting and gun raffles will be from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. at Groves Knights of Columbus Hall, 3749 Lincoln Ave., Groves.

Donations may be made to Neches Federal Credit Union account number 59432-1 — write in the memo line: Mike Browning benefit — at all Neches FCU locations in southeast Texas or call 409-722-1174.
