FOOTBALL: Mesquite Horn QB commits to Lamar

Lamar has secured its first announced football commitment for the 2019 season.

Mesquite Horn senior Jermaine Givens, ranked the 63rd-best dual-threat quarterback in the nation, announced he plans to sign with the Cardinals on Twitter late Friday. He is the only hard commit listed on 247Sports.com.

Givens, 6 feet and 186 pounds, completed 168 of 274 passes for 2,627 yards and 29 touchdowns with eight interceptions, according to 247Sports. He rushed 167 times for 1,275 yards and 20 touchdowns.

The two-star quarterback saw some time as a sophomore, when he combined for 1,169 offensive yards and 15 touchdowns, 10 of them passing.

The early national signing period for high school Division I athletes is Dec. 19-21. Mid-year junior college transfers may sign from Dec. 19-Jan. 15.
