PORT NECHES — Cajun culture will be celebrated with a Catholic Mass, hymns and more on Sunday.

The Annual Acadien/Cajun French Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at La Maison Beausoleil Museum Complex at Port Neches riverfront Park.

The Rev. Gary Schexnayder of Lafayette, La., will officiate the Mass and local musician Aaron Sterling will participate in the Mass and perform hymns.

Karen Mills, president of Les Acadiens Du Texas, a local nonprofit organization established to promote the Acadian language and culture in the area, said there will be Cajun food, cold drinks and a sweet shop.

Tours of the authentically restored Cajun home, La Maison Beausoleil, the Cajun kitchen and barn area will be open. No admission fee. The museum is open until 3 p.m. during the day of the festivities.

“We want to continue the legacy of the Cajuns and the language and heritage,” Mills said.

Mills spoke highly of The Rev. Schexnayder, saying he is entertaining as well as a wonderful priest.

Also during the event there will be CD’s and workbooks on how to speak the Cajun language.

Les Acadiens Du Texas is currently seeking new members.

“We are trying to get some new people in our group,” she said.

The group holds meetings every other month, celebrates flag day in August and holds a Christmas celebration.

Seating for Sunday’s event is for 250 and patrons can bring lawn chairs. In case of inclement weather an alternate site will be posted at the museum.
