Lewis Joseph Wilson, Jr., was born December 18, 1936, in Port Arthur, Texas. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1955, Lewis married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Sue Brown, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Port Arthur in 1958. He went on to study medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston. Between 1966 and 1967, he dutifully served his country as a General Medical Officer in the 24th Evacuation Hospital, Long Binh, Vietnam, providing life-saving surgical care to soldiers wounded in battle.

Lewis returned from war to practice obstetrics and gynecology in north Houston. There he helped to establish the Houston Northwest Medical Center and Cypress-Fairbanks Hospital, and served his community as that hospital’s first Chief of Staff. Dr. Lew delivered over 4,000 babies during his exemplary career.

Lewis retired from medicine to answer the call of the Lord through service to the most vulnerable. After graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary and being ordained a minster, he and Wanda traveled to Haiti, Russia, Cuba, Colombia, and Uganda, planting churches and offering medical care to orphaned children. The charitable foundation he established with his wife, called the Hesed Foundation, is his enduring legacy of commitment to this good work.
