Lewis Joseph Wilson, Jr., was born December 18, 1936, in Port Arthur, Texas. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1955, Lewis married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Sue Brown, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Port Arthur in 1958. He went on to study medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston. Between 1966 and 1967, he dutifully served his country as a General Medical Officer in the 24^th Evacuation Hospital, Long Binh, Vietnam, providing life-saving surgical care to soldiers wounded in battle.

Lewis returned from war to practice obstetrics and gynecology in north Houston. There he helped to establish the Houston Northwest Medical Center and Cypress-Fairbanks Hospital, and served his community as that hospital’s first Chief of Staff. Dr. Lew delivered over 4,000 babies during his exemplary career.

Lewis retired from medicine to answer the call of the Lord through service to the most vulnerable. After graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary and being ordained a minster, he and Wanda traveled to Haiti, Russia, Cuba, Colombia, and Uganda, planting churches and offering medical care to orphaned children. The charitable foundation he established with his wife, called the Hesed Foundation, is his enduring legacy of commitment to this good work.

Finally settling in Fredericksburg, Lewis devoted himself to church and family. There he passed peacefully in his home, October 1, 2015, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents Lewis J. Wilson, Sr., and Elma. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Wanda, by their three children, Kathy Wilson Payne and husband Randy of Houston, Bob Wilson and wife Michelle of San Antonio, Beth Wilson Adams and husband Rob of Fredericksburg, by nine grandchildren, and by one brother, Jack Wilson of Austin.

An affectionate and grateful family remembers Lewis for his joyful laughter, his steady leadership, and his service to the gospel. He was an example of godliness and upright living to all who met him.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend

Acknowledge, we beseech you, a sheep of your own fold,

A lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming.

Receive him into the arms of your mercy,

Into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into

The glorious company of the saints in light.

A memorial service to Lewis’ memory will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 6, at Oak Hills Church, located at 224 FM 2093, Fredericksburg, Texas, 78624. A graveside service and burial, immediately following Memorial Service, will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, located at 1665 N. Llano Street, Fredericksburg. A reception and opportunity to visit and pay respects to Lewis’ family will be held at Oak Hills Church following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hesed Foundation at 2339 Summit Forest, Fredericksburg, Texas, 78624.
