NEDERLAND PULLS OFF SWEEP OF CENTRAL

BEAUMONT — Emma Forsythe dealt 14 assists, Payton Swanson had 11 digs, and Nederland improved to 2-0 in District 22-5A with a 25-12, 25-10, 25-12 victory at Beaumont Central on Tuesday.

Abbey Montalvo scored four aces, assisted on nine kills and dug six for the winning Lady Bulldogs (17-9). Darcie Jones and Forsythe each had three aces, with Forsythe making five digs. Caroline Noel, Tatum Kieschnick and Marlie Lee each totaled eight kills, Noel added four aces and a block, and Lee aced two, dug six and made six kills.

Nederland will visit Goose Creek Memorial on Friday in Baytown.

At Bob Hope School on Tuesday, West Hardin defeated the Lady Eagles 25-22, 25-22, 25-16.

LAMAR TAKES SLC X-COUNTRY AWARDS

BEAUMONT — Lamar’s cross country program went 2 for 2 in Southland Conference awards Tuesday.

Iliass Aouani and Evelyn Chavez won the men’s and women’s Athlete of the Week awards from the league after helping Lamar put on outstanding efforts in recent meets. Aouani ran 18 minutes, 40.73 seconds to place second in the 5.5-kilometer Rice Invitational, his first collegiate race. Lamar won the men’s team standings in that event.

Chavez led a group of Cardinals who took third through fifth places in the women’s race. She ran 16:26.87 on the 3.8-K course, finishing as the top non-Rice runner and helping Lamar place fifth.

The next race for Lamar is the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 26.

COWBOYS PICK UP  BUTLER FROM RAIDERS

IRVING (AP) — The Cowboys have made their first move to try to fill in for Dez Bryant while the All-Pro receiver is sidelined with a broken right foot.

Dallas acquired receiver Brice Butler from Oakland on Tuesday for a conditional fifth-round pick in next year’s draft, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been announced.

Bryant, who led the NFL with 16 touchdown receptions last year, is expected to miss at least a month, and owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on his radio show that the bone could take six weeks to heal fully. Bryant had surgery Monday night.

TORONTO DECLINES BID FOR 2024 OLYMPICS

TORONTO (AP) — Mayor John Tory said Toronto will be a great venue for the Olympics one day.

Just not in 2024.

Tory said Tuesday that Canada’s largest city is going to stay out of the race for the 2024 Olympics because he felt it wasn’t the best use of the city’s time and money right now and said “nobody was rushing forward with their checkbooks.”

Tory had until Tuesday to write a letter to the International Olympic Committee to express interest.

The declared bidders for 2024 include Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, Budapest, Hungary, and Hamburg, Germany.
