GROVES — Aaron Cater spends a lot of time watching Youtube videos of firefighters in action so when he visited Port Arthur Fire Station No. 1 recently for his sixth birthday he made quite an impression on the crew.
Robin Cater, his mom, said he begged to go back for a visit on Tuesday saying “they needed his help.”
“He wanted me to drop him of at the fire station,” Robin Cater said.
But Aaron was in for a surprise. At around 6:30 p.m. not one but two fire trucks and a battalion chief’s vehicle pulled up in front of Cater’s home, lights flashing and sirens on. On board were Capt. Josh Resweber, Capt. Gerrit Achord, Battalion Chief Jeremy Holland and firefighters Cody Sanders, Kyle Roberts, Joshua Morgan, Chris Portie, Clint Aslin.
The firefighters came bearing gifts — a sleeping bag featuring a fire truck and a heavy duty toy fire truck complete with ladder and a tiny firefighter.
Aaron was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that affected his lower limbs. The athletic child enjoys baseball and basketball and participates in Adaptive Sports for Kids.
The six year old wants to be a firefighter when he grows up, he said.
“On his birthday he said ‘dad, this is the greatest gift,’” dad Gary Cater said of the visit to the fire station. “He’s watches fire truck videos on the phone all the time. I really appreciate these guys coming out.”
Achord said Aaron as well as the firefighters were excited with his visit to the station so the firefighters decided to pick up a few gifts and pay a visit to their fan.
“We are all so blessed in our life,” Achord said. “Any time we can help someone it makes our day.”
