PORT NECHES — For those unaware of what is available at the Port Neches Senior Citizen Center, the Summer of 2024 is going to be one heck of an introduction.

Rebecca Ward took over as center coordinator in February, following her passion to serve Mid County, which she describes as the best place to live.

“I left the classroom after 12 years to accept this role, and I wanted something that would allow me to continue working directly with people,” she said. “In teaching and here at the Center, the kids and the seniors are more of a blessing to me than I’ll ever be able to be to them.”

She is hitting the ground running with the launch of the senior center’s free Summer Entertainment Series — a new program that organizers are excited to share in June and July.

Four acts are planned, with the first free show set for next month.

The schedule includes:

  • Sharon and Bubba Meaux, June 13
  • Sonny the Birdman, June 27
  • Elvis tribute artist Jeff Rainey, July 11
  • Generations Day, July 25

“Many people don’t realize that you don’t have to live in Port Neches to enjoy all our center has to offer,” Ward stressed. “Our Center is for individuals in Jefferson County who are 60 or older. We are doing something extra special on the last day of the series, Generations Day. Our seniors are encouraged to invite their family and friends of all ages to enjoy hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn, canvas painting and a magician who will be here to entertain us all.”

Ward wanted to offer a variety of entertainment options with the summer series so there would be something for everyone.

“I love that we are showcasing local performers,” she said. “I think between country music, an Elvis tribute artist, a bird show and a magician, everyone will find something they’ll enjoy.”

All seniors in Jefferson County are encouraged to come out to see what the center offers.

There is no cost for seniors to enjoy all of the activities aside from lunch.

Lunch is typically $2 but could be free based on income.

The center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and basically acts as an activity or social center.

The center is located at 1006 Port Neches Avenue. Call 409-727-8650 for more information.

The traditional monthly calendar is full of bingo, live entertainment, educational presentations, crafts, exercise, movies, popcorn and more.

It offers an easy way to stay social and meet new people.

“We serve lunch every day, so it’s a great way to have a restaurant-style meal, especially for those who don’t like to or aren’t able to cook,” Ward said. “We really want to get our seniors out of their homes and keep them active in the community. They have so much wisdom and history to offer, so it’s important that they stay connected.”
