Port Neches man killed when driver misses exit, speeds through median

BEAUMONT — A motorist traveling at a high rate of speed reportedly missed his exit, drove through a grassy median, then lost control before fatally striking a pedestrian on Monday.

The Beaumont Police Department was notified of the fatal auto-pedestrian crash at approximately 5:45 p.m. in the area of U.S. 69 northbound service road, just north of the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.

The investigation revealed a male driver of the car was traveling north on U.S. 69 at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate an exit.

The driver attempted to drive thought the grassy median at the same speed and lost control of the vehicle and struck the victim, who was walking on the service road, according to information from police.

The pedestrian, a male, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The victim was identified as Dalton Drake, 24, who’s last known address was Port Neches.

The driver of the car was arrested on unrelated warrants.
