City of Groves disinfectant conversion could cause taste and odor changes

GROVES — The City of Groves public water system is temporarily converting the disinfectant used in the distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine.
The conversion begins today.
Customers may experience taste and odor changes associated with this type of temporary disinfectant conversion.
This conversion will last until area temperatures are warmer.
Public water systems are required to properly disinfect their water and maintain an adequate disinfectant residual in the distribution system.
Chloramine, free chlorine combined with ammonia, is widely used as a disinfectant.
The temporary conversion of the disinfectant to free chlorine is required because of the freezing temperatures and high-water demand.
