HELP WHEN NEEDED — City Council praises 15-year-old for aiding senior

NEDERLAND — One local teenager was honored by his city council with a special day in his honor — a recognition that followed truly Good Samaritan-actions.

Nederland City Manager Chris Duque led the honors this week by reading a declaration signifying Jan. 8, 2024, as Elijah Champion Day in the City of Nederland.

“In November, Mr. Champion spotted a senior citizen who had fallen while alongside South 25th Street, with the upper half of the senior’s body in the roadway,” Duque recounted. “He recognized the need for additional assistance. Mr. Champion went door to door seeking help.”

City leaders said because of the 15-year-old’s efforts, the senior citizen was safely helped.

“The City of Nederland is extremely proud of Mr. Champion for his willingness to help a stranger and for serving as an example for us all to follow,” Duque said during a special honor at Monday’s city council meeting.

Added Mayor Don Albanese: “we thank you for a job well done, thank you so much.”

Champion was lucky to be the area to help, as he was walking back from picking up a job application at a local grocery store when his path took him to the man in need.

Champion is a freshman in high school.
