Saigon Plaza’s Discount Shop opening demonstrates renewed growth along Gulfway Drive

A life sized mechanical Santa Claus that sings in three languages greets customers to the newly opened Discount Shop at 4439 Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur.
Inside the brightly lit shop are clothes, shoes, purses, souvenirs and more.
Owner Michelle Nguyen and husband Hoang own the building the shop is in — Saigon Plaza. They resurrected the long vacant building, gutted it and gave it a new lease on life. The approximate 2,500 square feet building can house eight units. Discount Shop is located in Suite B.
Nguyen said they chose this site on Gulfway Drive because the road is busy.
There are a number of other businesses locating or planning to locate in the plaza. Two doors down from Discount Shop in Suite D is Clipper Kings Barber Shop.
Hoang Nguyen said the barbershop is opening soon.
Other businesses working toward a location in the plaza include a restaurant, doctor’s office, vape shop and cell phone store.
Michelle Nguyen said it took two years to get the plaza refurbished and ready for tenants.
Discount Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
