My columns are often inspired by family and friend experiences.

Last week, my older daughter and son-in-law had a terrifying life experience, they lost their home to a fire that was in no way their fault.

It happened shortly after they got home from work, thankfully before they went to bed.

They were able to get out safely, along with their parrot and three cats. Thanks go to the professional services of Bedford Texas Fire Department and Bedford Police Department.

While most homes now have cameras that provide surveillance and security around the house, how many have ample smoke and fire sensors/alarms?

How about fire extinguishers?

Are they kept up to date, easily accessible?

Do you know how to use them?

This is a subject that I am finding is not a priority in a lot of homes.

Aside from having safety equipment, do you have a plan to get out quickly — a practiced plan?

There were just two people who lived in their home, a family with children or elderly adults need special considerations.

Do you keep medications in one central location?

How about important documents?

Are exits in your home clear of clutter and in good working order?

Do you have stickers at doors or windows alerting to children/elderly/pets living in home?

Elderly or incapacitated folks, did you know that you can contact your local fire department for assistance on installing smoke alarms?

People joke about the internet, but seriously, there is so much good information out there on fire prevention and safety — nfpa.org.

I strongly encourage you to explore resources for information. Be prepared. Please do not become a statistic.

One blessing that has come from this, my kids have found restored faith in humanity in that so many people have been so good to them since this tragedy occurred.

My daughter is an RN and is used to taking care of people, it is very hard for her to accept care from others. It has been humbling to all of our family.

I know that there will be changes in our home. Additional smoke alarms are being installed. More fire extinguishers placed in home.

I hope you will assess your needs and act accordingly. Stay well and stay safe, my friends.
