A Hitchcock man was recently indicted for homicide, and the Texas City woman he was dating indicted for aggravated perjury in relation to a fatal shooting that took place April 9 in Jefferson County.

The victim, Javoris Potier, 30, of Houston was trying to break up a fight between several women, one of which included Joelicia Evette Wade, 31, of Texas City when John Joseph Gutierrez, 25, allegedly shot him at close range while at LaDay Arena in Beaumont.

The arena was hosting the I-10 Super Ride, a two-day tail ride and zydeco concert, on the day of the shooting.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a fight broke out between several females from Galveston County just before the shooting.

An eyewitness reported seeing Gutierrez running from Potier while holding a gun and Potier said, “Why’d you shoot me man?”

Another eyewitness reportedly saw Gutierrez with a firearm just before the shooting, the document read.

Investigators later learned Gutierrez and Joelicia Evette Wade were in a romantic relationship.

Wade was one of the women involved in the fight, and Potier was reportedly attempting to court Wade, as well.

Wade and her sister were interviewed separately and each allegedly gave false statements to investigators to conceal Gutierrez’s identity and his relationship to Wade, authorities said.

Wade reportedly gave false answers to questions during grand jury questioning when asked who she rode home with when they left the event and did not mention Gutierrez’s name.

According to a probable cause affidavit for Wade, the deputies believe she was untruthful and tried to provide an alibi for Gutierrez.
