A Nederland man who reportedly struck a senior citizen in the head with a metal object and tried to take his keys did so because he was tired of walking, authorities said.
This week a Jefferson County grand jury indicted Jerry Alan Maghe Jr., 39, on a charge of aggravated robbery following the Sept. 25 altercation.
According to the affidavit for arrest, the crime occurred at Cowboy Truck Stop, 24740 I-10 in Hamshire.
When Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies approached the location, they saw a man sitting on the concrete barrier near a construction site who reportedly identified himself, then said he did not mean to hit the victim.
The deputy took the man into custody immediately, the document read.
Maghe allegedly told authorities he was walking along the interstate from Beaumont and was tired of walking and decided to walk in the parking lot, where saw an elderly male walking to his vehicle.
Maghe said he put his mask on and walked behind the man and attempted to take his keys and drive away in his vehicle, but the man resisted. Maghe reportedly told deputies he grabbed a short metal object out of his bag and repeatedly struck the other man on his hand to force him to let go of the keys.
A witness came over and assisted the older man in fighting off Maghe.
Maghe then walked to the interstate and threw the metal object in a ditch near the store.
The victim allegedly identified Maghe and the metal object was recovered.
Maghe was still listed as an inmate in the county jail with bond at $50,000 as of Friday afternoon.
