The African American Cultural Society, in collaboration with the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project, is sharing the schedule for a three-day commemorative event dedicated to celebrating African American heritage and history.

The public is welcome to join organizers Friday through Sunday in honoring the contributions of captive and enslaved Africans and their descendants.

Dec. 1: reception/meet and greet

• 2 to 4 p.m.
• Press Building Downtown, 500 4th Street in Port Arthur
• The event kicks off with a warm reception and meet and greet at the Press Building Downtown. It’s a perfect opportunity for the community and visitors to come together, socialize and set the tone for the meaningful days ahead.

Dec. 2: Remembrance ceremony and Port Marker unveiling

• 10:30 a.m.
• Popeye Holmes County Park, 500 4th Street in Port Arthur
• The highlight of the event will be the unveiling of “The Port Marker” at the historic Popeye Holmes County Park. Join us as we pay tribute to and recognize the achievements of captive Africans and their descendants and commemorate the significance of their journey.

Dec. 3: Church service

• 11 a.m.
• Israel Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church
• The commemorative event concludes with a heartfelt church service at the Israel Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. This spiritual gathering will provide an opportunity for reflection, gratitude and unity.

The three-day commemorative event is an opportunity to deepen everyone’s understanding of African American history, culture and contributions. It is a celebration of a shared history and an acknowledgment of the challenges faced and overcome.

These markers and ceremonies serve as a testament to their enduring spirit and indomitable strength.
