Numerous residents of a Port Arthur home were displaced following a fire Saturday night, authorities said.

Firefighters were dispatched just before 11 p.m. Saturday to the 4300 block of Lakeshore Drive and upon arrival saw heavy smoke and fire coming through the front door and out the back, Port Arthur Fire Chief Greg Benson said.

The covered back porch area collapsed during the fire.

Benson said he was told four people lived at the home.

No one was at the home at the time of the fire, authorities reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the home is uninhabitable at this time. Benson said the house would need to be evaluated by engineers to see if it can be repaired or must be torn down.

Response crews used an offensive interior attack and were able to control and extinguish the fire quickly. The fire did not impact surrounding homes, Benson added.

The American Red Cross was called and is assisting the residents of the home.

Port Arthur Fire Department leaders are asking residents to make sure they have a working smoke detector.
