VIDOR — The American Red Cross is assisting a North Vidor family after a fire destroyed their home and led to the death of a family pet.

Orange County Emergency Services District No. 1 Chief Robert Smith said authorities received the call of a wildfire at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at West Circle, which spread to a doublewide mobile home in the 5600 block of Wayside Street.

A person was burning something and the fire got out of control due to the wind switching direction and quickly got ahead of the fire crews, Smith said.

The family was able to get out of the home safely without injury. The family pet, however, was found in the home on a child’s bed. It is believed the pet was looking for the child and was overcome by smoke and died, according to information from the department.

Red Cross was at the scene and is assisting the family, Smith said.

Due to several other homes being threatened by the fire, ESD No. 1 received assistance from ESD NO. 2, ESD No. 3, Pinehurst, Evadale and Buna fire departments.

Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion but have since returned to duty.

A statement on ESD No. 1’s Facebook page offered comfort to those impacted.

“Once again our hearts and prayers go out to the family affected by this incident.”

Smith said the department has been busy and on Saturday there were 22 calls for fire and medical assistance.
