Elderly woman dies in Port Arthur; police make arrest, cite “severe neglect”

One arrest has been made and an investigation continues following an elderly victim’s death in Port Arthur, police said.

Det. Mike Hebert said emergency medical services requested officers respond to the 2900 block of 5th Street at approximately 1 p.m. Friday. EMS was treating an elderly female at the scene.

“Upon arrival, officers found the elderly victim to show signs of severe neglect,” Hebert said. “The victim was then transported to a local hospital and a short time later was pronounced deceased.”

According to police, an arrest has been made and investigators are waiting for autopsy results.

Alan Roy Hartzel, 46, of Port Arthur was arrested Friday and is being held in the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on a charge of injury to an elderly person.

The jail roster shows Hartzel was booked in at 3:42 p.m. Friday.

Bond is set at $500,000.

Information about the victim has not been released.
