Filing underway for Port Arthur, Nederland elections

Filing for seats on Port Arthur and Nederland city councils and their respective school boards is currently ongoing with a few already stepping up to the plate.

Port Arthur

A total of six seats are up for grabs on the Port Arthur City Council, including District 1 held by Raymond Scott Jr., District 2 held by Cal Jones, District 3 held by Thomas Kinlaw III, District 4 held by Harold Doucet Sr. and at-large seats Position 7 held by Charlotte Moses and Position 8 held by Kaprina Richardson Frank.

Scott has reached his term limit and cannot file to run for the same seat, according to the city.

Those wishing to file for a Port Arthur City Council seat can do so at the city secretary’s office in city hall, 444 Fourth St.

Terms are for three years.

An official with the city said there have been some filings but did not release the names because the city secretary had not verified the filings yet.

Port Arthur Independent School District

The seats being held by Diane Brown and Kenneth W. Lofton Sr. are up for election to the PAISD Board of Trustees.

Brown, a retired school district employee, has submitted her application for reelection.

Terms are for three years.

Persons wishing to file for a seat on the school board can do so at the administration office, 4801 Ninth Ave.

Nederland City Council

Two seats are up for grabs on Nederland City Council this election cycle, including the Ward I seat held by Talmadge Austin and the Ward III seat held by Emmett Hollier.

Hollier ran successfully for the seat last year when it was vacated by Don Albanese, who dropped off the city council to run for mayor, a position he won.

As of Friday, Hollier, was the only one who had filed for election.

Terms are for three years.

Interested persons can pick up a packet to apply at Nederland City Hall, 207 N. 12th St., Nederland.

Nederland Independent School District

Two seats are up for Nederland ISD Board of Trustees as well.

They include the seat held by Kay DeCuir and the seat held by Jerry Albanese.

So far DeCuir is the only one to have filed for reelection.

Terms are for three years and are at-large.

Interested persons can pick up a packet to apply at the NISD administration building, 220 17th St., Nederland.

Filing dates

Filing for a spot on the municipal or school board ballots ends on Feb. 14.

The general election day is May 2.
