NEDERLAND — Nederland Police Department and school officials are investigating the sighting of a gun on the high school campus.
Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter said that around 12:21 p.m. Thursday a student was being picked up in the student parking lot when another student witnessed a person in that vehicle wave a revolver around. The person reportedly with the gun was not a student at the school.
Police don’t believe the weapon was being used in a threatening way, he said.
No one was taken into custody at the time.
“We will conduct a thorough investigation and if criminal charges are warranted or suggested we will file the appropriate charge,” he said.
Rene Latiolais, communications coordinator for NISD, said she could not talk about the investigation but believes the person with the firearm was a passenger in a vehicle.
A news release stated the incident happened while a Nederland High School student was being picked up during the first lunch period in the student parking lot and another student reportedly witnessed a weapon in the vehicle as it was leaving campus. It was quickly reported to administration and Nederland police officers on campus responded immediately. The NPD will have an increased presence at district schools while this incident is being investigated.
“Student and staff safety are the top priority of Nederland ISD and we commend the student for taking the appropriate action and reporting it to campus administration,” Latiolais said in the news release.
