NEDERLAND — Police said they identified a 17-year-old suspect who they believe brought a handgun to the Nederland High School campus Thursday.

Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter said a male was seen brandishing a handgun in the student parking lot at 2108 N 18^th Street at approximately 11:50 a.m.

Police said the suspect is not a student at Nederland High School, adding officers recovered a handgun thought to have been shown off at the school.

“At this time, no clear motive has been established as to why the suspect had the handgun on school property,” Porter said in a release.

“Nederland Police Department detectives are still investigating this incident and, if warranted, will file appropriate charges with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.”

The suspect was not named by police.
