Rain poured and dark clouds loomed Monday morning with only a sprinkling of people visible at Avery Trace Apartments just days after the shooting death of Deshandric Clayton.
The yellow crime scene tape was gone, erasing evidence of the heavy police presence that was there Friday afternoon when Clayton was shot in the chest while in a breezeway at the complex at 4260 FM 365. The victim, born in 1996, died at a local hospital from the single gunshot wound.
Police announced there was a person of interest early into the investigation but did not release any additional information about that person on Monday.
When asked if the crime was gang related, PAPD Det. Mike Hebert said officers are looking into that aspect but he couldn’t say for sure.
“We are looking into several motives,” he said.
It is unknown if the victim fired back at the shooter or if he was somehow targeted.
The complex has been the scene of violent crimes in the past; some of which include the 2018 shooting death of Joseph Boudreaux, 25, and the 2017 shooting death of Javonte Jack, 20.
